Flophouse Project Update: La Buanderie

Progress.  We finished painting "la buanderie" (the laundry room) last week and it looks so much better.

Alas, house projects are a little like makeovers.  You gussy up one thing (new glasses, lipstick, tummy tuck) and suddenly you start seeing flaws in all the other parts.  That was the trap we fell into.  The laundry room looked so good that we decided to paint the upstairs toilet and the shower as well.   Once those were done we noticed that the kitchen looked pretty bad so it was off to the hardware store for more paint and so on and so forth.  At some point we will need to remember that "le mieux est l'ennemi du bien" (better is the enemy of good) but not just yet.....

Here is what the laundry room looked like before painting and below are a few shots of its new look :

Bathroom is still in progress (and now the kitchen too).

Bon weekend!

Hello Victoria; I came over from the IBS blog because I missed hearing your comments. It is a pleasure to read your blog - on whatever topic you write about.

I thought I would share this after reading about your bathroom project, and worrying about the unintended effects of using chlorine bleach to fight molds.

We had an almost insurmountable problem with a wet basement and mold. The air quality/mold expert we used advised us to clean and then spray clean surfaces (walls, etc.) with Benefect http://www.benefect.com/ - a commercial product made from essence of thyme oil - as safer than just using chlorine bleach (OSHA no longer recommends bleach) . It did work, and I use Benefect now - in a bathroom that has very little ventilation. I also used the advice here: http://www.osha.gov/dts/shib/shib101003.html/ http://www.cmhc-schl.gc.ca/en/co/maho/yohoyohe/momo/momo_005.cfm http://www.epa.gov/mold/mold_remediation.html

Google this and it explains why the thyme oil based spray works:
Inhibitory Effect of Essential Oils on Decay Fungi and Mold Growth ...ddr.nal.usda.gov/bitstream/10113/26998/1/IND44168073. by VW Yang - 2007 - Cited by 4 - Essential oils were also evaluated for inhibition of mold growth in laboratory tests by two methods. Specimens dip-treated with thyme or geranium Egyptian oil......

Hi Anonymous, It's a pleasure to read you here at the Flophouse. Thanks for stopping by. That product looks very interesting and hopefully would be easier on my hands than the straight bleach. Great tips. Merci.
