Manifest Destiny was not dreamed up by Americans even if they think it was. Ran into a Scot in a bar in Wisconsin (true story). I told him I had no opinion on this week's referendum. He looked at me as if I was a clueless bastard (he's for separation)...as if Scotland's concerns should be everyone's...much like the Yanks think.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2424131704277823220.post-85901104712445965442014-03-18T05:15:37.814+01:002014-03-18T05:15:37.814+01:00Fascinating sample. I expect the Student Loan refugees will pick up in numbers over the years.

Family is what I expected #1 to be, although Homelanders somehow don't think of it, oftentimes.

I don't know what the peculiar animus against people leaving is, unless it is really that the country was founded on a sort of Calvinist covenental socio-theology, such that emigration can only be a sort of apostasy. This is not consciously realized as such, but I think it is there under the cultural surface and a secularist facade.

Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17546711532441977244noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2424131704277823220.post-61219497365419110462014-03-13T12:18:12.948+01:002014-03-13T12:18:12.948+01:00It interesting the reasons why Americans emigrate....It interesting the reasons why Americans emigrate. My late husband and I emigrated to Canada for reason 7 forty four years ago. We stayed and became citizens because we realized we fit more in the Canadian way of thinking.

FATCA is now my nightmare.Northerndarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01562999941086433360noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2424131704277823220.post-90948356401760480372014-03-12T17:53:41.134+01:002014-03-12T17:53:41.134+01:00FATCA is not about taxes, they already know less t...FATCA is not about taxes, they already know less than $1 billion annual return on this program. And if there ever was an indication that gay and lesbian couples were second-class citizens in the US, this is exhibit A. Not being able to live legally in the same country as one's spouse? That is definitely flagrant unacceptable discrimination. OK, it's changing but as you point out it's going to take awhile... They had hoped to retire in Canada because my sister's wife can sponsor her for immigration in a way I can't as her sister.

They wanted to do that because they find Canada far more accepting and inclusive.

Since they have learned about FATCA, FBAR, IRS, etc, they realize they will never achieve that dream.Blazehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12871285356307431578noreply@blogger.com
